If you're in the market for a new Xbox 360 controller after throwing yours at the wall in a fit of rage, but don't want the same old thing, you may want to check this out. Ebay seller trioxin_kustoms has created a pretty slick steampunk Xbox 360 controller, re-purposing 1940's keyboard keys for one lucky customer's gaming pleasure.
According to the eBay listing, the controller was disassembled, cleaned and then hand-painted to resemble aged-wood before it was put back together. The back side was also hand painted, but trioxion decided to go with an old steel look there, while painting the right and left bumpers to resemble aged brass. To finish things off, the whole controller was coated in “high quality urethane automotive clear.”
While I must admit the paint turned out great, its the new action buttons and joysticks that really bring the package together. While trioxin_kustoms could have taken the easy route and just painted the standard buttons, he instead chose to replace them with keys from an old 1940's typewriter. The joysticks got the same treatment on top, utilizing old “shift” keys.
The auction ends on July 28th and at the time of writing this I had watched the price move from around $60 up toward the $110 mark, but that's not the only steampunk gaming gear we came across today.
A Japanese creative type apparently wanted to make his 3DS a bit louder and also chose the steampunk route. While it may not be the most practical solution to boosting the audio on your portable, it certainly looks cool! We don't have much info on the custom dock (we don't speak or read Japanese), but you can check it out in the video below. Make sure to pay attention when he starts putting the the amplifiers on so you can get an idea for how big the difference is.
